Ants of Santa Barbara County | Symbiota, Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration

View the checklist of ant species and genera found in Santa Barbara County.

In my post-bachelor's work at the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration (CCBER), along with an internship with the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History (SBMNH), I have created a checklist of ants of Santa Barbara County by identifying over 20 genera of ants (family Formicidae). This entailed curating, processing, and databasing over a thousand individual ant specimens with my coworker and collaborator Zach Brown.

This work helps document the local historic spread of the ecologically important and virulently invasive Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) and the native ant populations before and after.

Citizen Science

Nest Box Project | Santa Barbara Audubon Society

For three years, I worked as an undergraduate intern and volunteer under the Santa Barbara Audubon Society to help manage their nest box project at two sites. I personally banded 142 young and adult songbirds under a sub-permit, organized citizen science volunteers, and presented at professional conferences and volunteer information meetings.
